Staying Safe at Disney

The recent events in Orlando gave me pause on many levels. Without getting into my politics or thoughts on the situation, it did give me (and a lot of other Disney bloggers) a reason to share tips for staying safe while at Walt Disney World® Resort.

Yes, Disney is a very safe place – but it is also a crowded place where people tend to forget they’re in a crowded place and assume they’ll enjoy the same level of security they have at home.

Don’t Be a Tourist

I preach a lot on this blog about how to prepare for your Disney vacation. So if you’ve done your homework, you have an idea of what you’re doing every day. Don’t bury your head in a map or wave around a wad of $100 bills.

Don’t Make it Easy for Criminals

Some common sense tips:

  • Leave your valuables at home, Disney is not a place for your Gucci handbag. If you leave that handbag, even for a moment, I bet someone will snatch it.

  • If you must bring valuables (such as a DSLR camera) to the Parks, be prepared to carry it every place you go, including the restroom.

  • Keep your wits about you when returning to your Resort room and never EVER open the door to anyone you don’t feel comfortable admitting.

  • Don’t carry a lot of cash or credit cards. I usually stick with $20 in cash, my Annual Passholder card, debit card, photo ID and medical insurance card. I put those in a plastic baggie in the diaper bag.

The Rules are There for a Reason

I applaud Disney for banning selfie sticks. I also applaud folks who listen to the Cast Members at the security check points to keep those long lines moving. You can help them do their jobs and keep those lines moving by:

  • Opening all of the zippers on their bags

  • Opening up any sunglass cases or other ‘interior’ zipped items

  • Taking things out from under your stroller

  • Leaving your selfie stick at home

  • Leaving any glass containers at home

  • Obeying Disney’s costume policies if attending a special event

And, finally, please. Don’t complain about the security lines, or about being ‘randomly selected’ to walk through the metal detector. We live in (sadly) dangerous times, gentle readers, and Disney is doing everything they can to keep their guests safe and make sure you have a magical time.
