Disney FAQ: Where should I stay?

The first question I ask someone when they tell me they're going to the Walt Disney World Resort is: "Where are you staying?" Many times, this is because I have a serious case of vacation envy and I'm going to mentally place myself in a room at that resort.

But if someone asks ME where THEY should stay, I'll tell them honestly that it's a two-fold decision that comes down to budget and needs. A Disney vacation is expensive, and while there are plenty of deals to be had (always book with a travel agent - jenn@whitneyworldtravel.com is the best), the place where you lay your head a night will be a big part of your vacation budget. Think also about your needs: does your spouse need their own bathroom? (Mine does). Do your kids need more space than you'd get in a typical hotel room? Would you rather be able to cook a few meals in an apartment-style room vs. restaurants?

Think hard about what you need and what you're willing to give up. If all you're going to do is sleep somewhere, consider a Value resort. If you want a bit more in terms of bells and whistles, the next step up is a Moderate resort. You'll get the MOST bells and whistles at a Deluxe resort - and these also include the Disney Vacation Club properties.

Back in April, we stayed at a 2 bedroom lock-off villa at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jambo House. The only thing I took issue with was that the second bedroom was actually a studio apartment. Ronan was NOT a fan...he was way too far away from Mom & Dad. Nobody slept that trip. Ugh.

The best two bedroom we've stayed in so far has been at Old Key West Resort. The room was HUGE, the bedrooms on opposite sides of the floorplan, but it was just right for our little family to spread out. Ronan even took to riding his bike IN the room, that's how much space we had.

Bottom line: Figure out your budget, then email my travel agent. She'll make sure you get everything you need for your family!
